Van Gisbergen to race military-inspired Red Bull livery

Van Gisbergen’s #97 Chevrolet Camaro will bear a grey base while Zilisch will race the #88 entry in Red Bull’s customary blue.

Both cars feature superimposed, pop-riveted panels made to look like military vehicles.

The liveries are also something of a throwback to 2011 when the former Team Red Bull squad ran a blue and grey Toyota Camry pair.

Van Gisbergen and Zilisch are among the favourites for the inaugural race at the Coronado Naval Base.

Before then, they will race at Pocono. The ‘Tricky Triangle’ is one of the toughest on the schedule.

In recent races, van Gisbergen has benefited from qualifying being rained out. That’s seen him start up the front.

However, a poor showing at Michigan ultimately buried him in the pack and wound up with him being caught up in a wreck, resulting in his first DNF of the season.

“I think it’s always just time and always learning stuff throughout the race and learning the flow of the race better,” said van Gisbergen of his progression.

“And then the further up front you are, the better people race you, as well, so that’s always
nice.

“It’s a real dogfight in the back, so getting away from that is a nice break.

“I think it really shows the importance of qualifying, getting up front, making no mistakes, and you can stay out there all day.”

Van Gisbergen reiterated that he still has a long way to go before he can be a regular front-runner on ovals.

“I don’t think I’m there yet. Like I still have a lot to learn, I’ve got a long way to go, but it’s definitely nice to show glimpses and show that I am learning,” he explained.

“I just match myself to my teammates. Ross (Chastain) and Connor (Zilisch) are exceptional drivers and being able to be around them, ahead of them, or close to them a lot of the time, is really good steps for me.

“Ross is a really good benchmark.”

The NASCAR Cup Series at Pocona takes place on Monday at 5am AEST.
